What are Cranberries?

Cranberries belong to the family Ericaceae of kingdom Plantae and their edible fruit is a ‘ berry ‘ which is very acidic in taste. Globally, the United States is the leading producer of cranberries followed by Canada and Chile. Its sauce is a very popular festive delicacy and is served at Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners in the united kingdom, Canada, and the United States.

Types of Cranberries:

  • Common cranberry or northern cranberry: These are found in the Northern hemisphere and their berries are pale pink to red in color with an acidic flavor.
  • Small cranberry: They are found in North America, northern Europe & Northern Asia and are mainly like common cranberries.
  • Large cranberry or American cranberry: It is found in North America, the eastern US, and its fruit has an apple-like flavor.

Usually, fresh cranberries have an acidic flavor so mostly they are processed into juice and sauce, some cranberries are dried also. Dried cranberries are half dehydrated and sweetened fresh cranberries. During processing, a lot of sugar is added to dried cranberries, making them poor in nutrients, so organically dried cranberries should be preferred.

Cranberries are rich in phytonutrients called A-type proanthocyanidins or condensed tannins which are the antioxidants that prevent E.coli from attaching to the lining of the urinary tract & bladder. A research article was published in Nutrition Journal in 2013 titled, ‘ Consumption of sweetened, dried cranberries may reduce urinary tract infection incidence in susceptible women– a modified observational study ‘ and as per the results of the research, the consumption of sweetened dried cranberries had a beneficial effect on the reduction of UTIs in susceptible women.
